Is Vegan Dog Food and Cat Food OK for Pets?
Many people around the world are now professing vegetarian diets for their pet dogs and cats. On the other hand some veterinarians also oppose the idea. The question for you is that is vegan diet OK for the dogs and cats?A sizable number of people around the world prefer vegetarian diets. Very often non-vegetarian items even do not find place in their homes. However it becomes difficult for them when they take some pets at their home, especially little carnivorous animals like dogs and cats. However the question for you would be is it possible to have purely vegetarian dog food or cat food for your pets.
Experts vary in their opinion about the type of vegetarian dog food or cat food that can be used for nourishing the pets. Some are of the opinion that it is easier for the dogs adapting to vegan or such diet that is less restrictive vegan diets but it is not that easy for the pet cats. To them the food for cat must have some non-vegetarian ingredients. It is felt that such nutrition is more necessary for the cat than the dog or in other words the nutritional requirements of dogs are not as strictly formulated as that of the cats.
Many animal welfare organizations and those who advocate for the protection and better life for the animals share the concern of these experts. According to Mindy Bough who is one of the senior directors for the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – “With humans, of course, we believe that whether or not to consume meat is a personal and private choice. With our pets, of course, we’re deciding for them.” She also claimed that shelving their personal views the pet owners should consult and conform to the advices of veterinarians on the nutritional diets and deficiencies relating to dog food or cat food.
To experts like Bough, dogs are mostly carnivores and yet they can adjust to varied types of diets including the vegetarian ones. However their vegetarian diets may not be exactly the type of vegetarian diets one would be accustomed to. The dog food here would include eggs besides milk as well as other animal products. However cat food is an altogether different matter. They have the stringent dietary requirements that are very challenging. They require nutrients like amino acid, vitamin A, calcium, iron as well as vitamin B and perhaps everything they need may not be available in strictly vegetarian diet.
