For most of us, pet fishes are equally adorable and need importance as other pets do. So to follow certain guidelines which often help to offer care to the pet fish in a most effective way, is a welcome idea for sure. Let’s see what are the steps you should follow before jumping in to grow the pet fish on practical basis.
1) Locating a good retail fish store: With the wide variety of fishes available in the market, you should be aware of the type which you are looking for. Each fish have a broad selection for which you need to find your favourite ones. Do not compromise if the stores are little far from your place. Do not settle with minimum options at the local stores. Even if you need to take a long distance to find the befitting fish store, the pain is perfectly balanced once you get hold of your favourite fish. Some stores even offer the fishes at carnivals or events, so you can have your luck at that time too.
2) Procuring a good fish bowl: The analogy between a human and a good house is similar to that of a fish and its bowl. The bowl should be a larger than the average size. Do not negotiate with the size of the bowl. The fish must get a large surrounding to roam freely. A circular or oval shaped bowl serves the best due to the exposure of a larger surface area to the outside air. This ensures a perfect breathing atmosphere for the fish.
3) Check the water quality in the bowl: The water quality should be monitored regularly so that you can immediately replace the hazy water. This of course depends on how frequently and how greatly you feed your fish. Moreover, size of the fish also controls the time of water change.
4) Feed your fish adequately: We know that you can be generous to feed your fish more than the way he deserves, but this can be fatal sometimes. Over-feeding might just kill your fish even though your purport was just to see him grow. Many fishes like gold fish for example has a short memory span, so it continues to eat till the time you stop feeding. Restrict your feed to a single pinch every day. You should also keep in mind that more you feed; you need to change the water more often. But this is not a problem at all if the more food you give does not come under over-feed category.
5) Ensure safety and maintenance before leaving for a vacation: if it is less than a week, you can leave your fish with the minimum amount of nourishment. Do not feed him surplus right before you leave for vacation. Stick to the regular amounts. Maintenance demand will be low for obvious reason that less intake of food will generate less waste. But if you leave house for more than a week, it will be wise to keep someone in charge to change the water and feed the fish at least once in a week basis.
Other than the above steps, you should avoid your fish getting exposed to sudden change of temperature in water or outside environment. Always check the water temperature before changing the old contents. And avoid adding any sort of extra items to the fish bowl.
